Shrek trouve sa nouvelle vie familiale trop routinière et agitée et regrette le temps où il faisait peur à tout le monde, c'est alors qu'il rencontre un magicien roublard, (le fameux Rumpelstiltskin en Vo) qui lui propose de revenir comme avant pendant un jour...
Je dois dire que je n'ai jamais accroché à la franchise Shrek, le premier film avait fait son petit effet en détournant les classiques de Disney, mais les suites étaient très dipensables surtout après un troisième opus catastrophique. Pour conclure (on l'éspère) la franchise, les scénaristes ont imaginés un monde parallèle (un peu à la Retour vers futur II) est le résultat est pluôt réussit.
Le film est plein de trouvailles sympathiques, Fiona en guerrière, le joueur de flûte, les sorcières, Potté en matou d'"appartement" etc. et contient aussi quelques jolis moments d'émotions avec un Shrek assez touchant. Certes, ce n'est pas non plus une réussite totale comme les récentes productions DreamWorks, mais Shrek 4 rehausse quand même le niveau par rapport au précédent film, malgré une animation toujours étrangement statique sans doute pour rester dans la continuité des précédents métrages.
Shrek 4, il était une fin est donc une sympathique conclusion à une franchise plus qu'inégale, en espérant tout de même que ce soit vraiment la fin.
