A Rome, au début des années 70, une jeune américaine arrive dans un couvent pour se faire introniser nonne, mais elle repère d'étranges choses qui s'y passe.
La Malédiction, c'est le film de Richard Donner sorti en 1976 avec Grégory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner et la musique de Jerry Goldsmith, réponse de la Fox au succès de Warner de L'Exorciste et qui connu trois suites et un remake en 2006. Ce film-ci est un préquel au premier qui partait très mal avec une promo désastreuse et qui donnait pas du tout envie et on a droit à une très bonne surprise.
La réalisatrice Arkasha Stevenson gère bien les mouvements de foule spectaculaire où la ville de Rome est secouée par des manifestation et distille une ambiance qui petit à petit vire évidemment au fantastique mais sans en faire des tonnes comme dans le cinéma actuel.
Le deuxième tiers nous sert un accouchement digne de la série Alien et plein de révélations qui nous amène à un climax final fait un peu de fan service, mais qui fait le lien de manière intelligente et surprenante avec le film de Donner.
La grosse révélation est l'actrice Nell Tiger Free qui s'en sort très bien pour son premier grand rôle au côté des vétérans Bill Nighy où Ralph Ineson.
Certes, ce préquel n'était peut être pas nécessaire, mais on a échappé vraiment au pire et cela s'avère une heureuse surprise, Arkasha Stevenson étant désormais une réalisatrice à suivre.
