Dans un monde où humain et Pokémon cohabitent, le jeune Tim Goodman se rend à Ryme City (la ville des Pokémons) car il apprend que son père a été tué lors d'un accident de voiture. Héritant de son Pokémon qu'il peut comprendre après avoir inhalé un gaz, ils se lancent dans une enquête pour trouver les coupables.
Sur le papier, l'adaptation de la célèbre franchise Pokémon avait tout pour se planter sur grand écran et se faire démolir sur la toile comme bon nombre de projets du même type, suite à une bonne promo c'est le contraire qui s'est produit et c'est mérité.
A son actif, un univers visuel maîtrisé où cohabitent humain et créatures visuellement qui tient la route et qui ne sont pas trop ridicule. Une enquête digne de polars qui n'est pas sans rappeler un certain Roger Rabbit. Quelques séquences spectaculaires, une forêt vivante (l'un des meilleurs moments du film) et une bataille finale sympathique. Et un twist sur Ryan Reynolds assez prévisible mais bien amené.
Justice Smith (qui n'a aucun lien avec Will mais vu dans le dernier Jurassic World) apporte un capital de sympathie, tout comme la craquante Kathryn Newton.
Le film n'est pas sans défaut avec quelques clichés et on se demande ce que Ken Watanabe et surtout le grand Bill Nighy font dans cette histoire, besoin d'arrondir les fins de mois ?
Mais cela mise à part, Pokémon Détective Pikachu est une excellente surprise (le savoir faire de Rob Letterman, le premier Chair de Poule, n'y est pas pour rien) et son succès inattendu pourrait même apporter des suites ce dont on ne serait guère étonné, c'est tout le bien qu'on lui souhaite.
