Un virus mystérieux transforme certains humains en animaux. François et Emile dont la mère subit cette transformation s'exile dans le Sud de la France pour suivre la maladie de cette dernière quand Emile découvre qu'il se transforme lui aussi..
Nouvelle tentative de cinéma de genre français avec ce nouveau film de Thomas Cailley où l'on plonge ici dans le fantastique et c'est plutôt réussi.
Cailley s'intéresse plus à la relation père, fils très bien joués par les excellents Romain Duris et la découverte Paul Kircher, la transformation du fils étant une métaphore du passage à l'âge adulte.
Le réalisateur dépeint un environnement vraiment original pour un film français avec des créatures et transformations étonnantes. Emile devient ami avec un homme qui devient oiseau ce qui donne de jolies scènes. Même Adèle Exarchopouos passe bien ici avec également de jolis paysages tournés dans les forêts girondines au moments des fameux incendies.
On pourra reprocher quelques longueurs et une fin un peu en suspens, mais Le Règne animal est une vraie proposition originale dans le cinéma français (après Acide) qui peut redonner au public l'envie d'aller voir ces films.
