Fantastique de Terence Fisher avec Peter Cushing, Richard Pasco, Barbara Shelley, Christopher Lee, Michel Goodliffe, Patrick Troughton et Jack Watson

Au début du siècle dernier, des meurtres mystérieux sont commis dans un petit village où les cadavres sont changés en statues de pierre. On soupçonne une créature mythologique d'être la coupable.
Voulant certainement sortir des cycles, Dracula où Frankenstein, la Hammer convoque ici un monstre rarement utilisé au grand écran la Gorgone dont on connaît surtout la plus célèbre, Méduse vue dans plusieurs films, les deux versions du Choc des Titans, Percy Jackson etc.
Convoquant son trio fétiche, Terence Fisher à la réalisation, Peter Cushing et Christopher Lee, le film se démarque toutefois de ses prédécesseurs.
Par le fait que Cushing et surtout Lee (qui apparaît tardivement) n'ont pas les mêmes rôles habituels notamment le premier, qui campe un professeur de sciences un peu ambigu et dont les personnages secondaires deviennent vite ceux principaux. Et l'identité de la créature qui s'est réincarnée en un être humain normal nous surprend en plutôt bien.
On notera que comme toujours, Fisher gère parfaitement une ambiance étrange et réussie et un final en absolu non happy end où à peu près tous les protagonistes périssent sous le regard de la fameuse créature dont on pardonnera l'aspect physique assez raté, période et budget sans doute obligent. Mais La Gorgone reste un Hammer film peu connu efficace, qui fait son petit effet encore aujourd'hui et demeure à découvrir.
