Sur les rives du Mississippi, 2 amis adolescents découvrent sur une île un bateau juché sur un arbre suite aux dernières inondations, ce bateau est habité par un fugitif nommé Mud avec qui le plus âgé se lie d'amitié, mais Mud est recherché par une puissante famille pour avoir abattu l'un des fils.
Le nouveau film de Jeff Nichols après le remarqué Take Shelter était attendu au tournant, il ne déçoit pas et livre ici sans doute son film le plus accessible.
Mud se passe sur les rives du Mississippi (comme le suggère le sous titre français qu'il faut mieux oublier), le réalisateur filme comme jamais la nature et les lieux étranges de l'endroit, l'ombre de Mark Twain et Huckleberry Finn ne sont jamais loin.
Le film et le scénario tranche avec la production courante hollywoodienne puisque le cinéaste nous donne à voir une histoire d'amitié mais aussi un parcours initiatique pour le jeune héros qui va grandir tout au long du film, le tout sur un rythme lent mais jamais ennuyeux et porté par ses acteurs.
Matthew McConaughey en état de grâce depuis le succès de La défense Lincoln est ici méconnaissable est excellent idem pour Reese Whiterspoon, mais c'est le jeune acteur Tye Sheridan qui vole la vedette à ses illustres aînés et dont on reparlera.
Le film est donc une réussite, on pourra regretter une histoire de vengeance un peu superficielle, mais l'atmosphère du film, le jeu des acteurs et l'originalité de l'entreprise font qu'il faut assurément y jeter un coup d'oeil.
Mud est vraiment à voir surtout si vous en avez assez des films de super héros et de science fiction qui aussi divertissants soient-ils, cela ne fait pas de mal de temps en temps de changer d'horizon.
