L'épopée du Roi Arthur de sa naissance jusqu'à sa mort en passant par la quête du Graal.
Cinéaste célèbre dans les années 70/80, John Boorman est un de ces réalisateurs qui ont eu du mal à passer le cap des années 2000, on lui doit pourtant quelques classiques, Délivrance, La forêt d'Emeraude et cet Excalibur qui constitue sans conteste son film somme.
Avec Excalibur, John Boorman réalise une très belle épopée qui a sans doute vieillie aujourd'hui mais qui tient toujours la route. Le réalisateur signe de très beaux moments de cinéma, une reconstitution visuelle absolument magnifique et spectaculaire, en voir principalement en blu ray, et une relecture des plus originales de la légende du Roi Arthur.
Il faut être certes un peu attentif pour un film assez exigeant et qui n'exclut pas quelques longueurs et dont le style peut rebuter, mais Excalibur demeure vraiment une réussite qui mérite sa réputation.
Côté distribution, parmi la crème des acteurs anglais on reconnaîtra à leurs débuts Liam Neeson et Gabriel Byrne, le film fourmille de morceaux de bravoures comme les batailles et la quête du Graal est une des séquences les plus réussies de l'ensemble.
Excalibur est donc un des meilleurs films de la légende du Roi Arthur qui faut avoir vu au moins une fois sous peine de rater quelque chose qui a certes vieillit mais qui tient toujours très bien la distance.
