A Londres, un homme sort de prison après avoir passé 3 ans pour une bagarre qui a mal tourné. Il veut oublier et trouve du travail en devenant le garde du corps d'une vedette de l'écran qui s'est réfugiée en ville. Mais son ancien partenaire le tenace et son passé va le rattraper.
1er film de William Monahan surtout connu pour avoir écrit le scénario de Kingdom of Heaven et des Infiltrés, un polar british qui bien que se passant à notre époque n'est pas sans rappeler les films du genre dans les années 70 comme La loi du milieu avec Michael Caine.
London Boulevard est un petit thriller sortit de nulle part qui demeure plutôt agréable sans révolutionner le genre toutefois. A son actif de très bons acteurs entourent Colin Farrell (plutôt bon) Ben Chaplin et surtout David Thewlis dans des registres un peu déjantés. Keira Knightley s'en sort bien aussi mais n'est pas la vedette du film.
Après, il y a donc une ambiance seventies pas désagréable et l'histoire se suit sans déplaisir, mais Monahan ne propose rien d'inédit et on a l'impression d'avoir vu cent fois au cinéma le scénario, Scorsese ou De Palma ont beaucoup fait mieux par ailleurs et la fin est plutôt prévisible.
Au final, London Boulevard est un petit polar sympathique avec une ambiance années 70 nostalgique soutenu par de très bons acteurs, mais rien de bien original toutefois au niveau des anciens truands qui veulent raccrocher. A voir pour passer un Samedi soir tranquille.
