Après le succès de La mort aux trousses, Alfred Hitchcock jette son dévolu sur Psycho un roman adapté d'un fait divers sordide. Sa femme et les membres de la censure le persuade de renoncer.
Estampillé maître du suspense (même s'il n' a pas fait que ce genre) Alfred Hitchcock est devenu une îcone pour toute une génération de cinéphiles. Tardivement reconnu en France, c'est à des gens comme François Truffaut où Claude Chabrol à qui on doit sa notoriété, Sacha Gervasi s'attache ici à une période charnière du cinéaste alors en pleine gloire qui tente le tout pour le tout pour porter à l'écran un sujet sordide et sulfureux pour l'époque et qui donnera le chef d'oeuvre que l'on sait.
La reconstitution est très soignée, on apprend beaucoup des dessous du Hollywood d'antan notamment chez les censeurs, les trucages, studios de tournages, négociations etc.
Le film s'attache aussi à la relation qu'à Hitchcock avec sa femme Alma Reville jouée par une touchante Helen Mirren ce qui nous des moments plutôt réussis.
Mais la vraie attraction du film, c'est évidemment Anthony Hopkins dans le rôle titre qui est véritablement le maître du suspense, maquillé, allant même jusqu'à imiter sa voix (mieux voir le film en VO), l'acteur est magistral.
Scarlett Johansson en Janet Leigh s'en sort bien ainsi que Danny Huston en obscur scénariste aujourd'hui oublié.
Le film n'évite pas les maladresses et quelques longueurs et n'est pas la réussite espérée, mais le tout est quand même original, frais et croustillant.
Hitchcock est donc un sympathique divertissement avec un Anthony Hopkins au sommet de son art et une reconstitution qui ravira les cinéphiles, déjà pas si mal non ?
