Un expert en sécurité des manèges de fêtes foraines et le FBI s'unissent pour arrêter un dangereux tueur qui menace de provoquer des catastrophes sur les grands huit sous paiment d'une rançon.
Après les avions, les paquebots, les grattes ciels où autre catastrophe naturelles, le cinéma catastrophe justement très en vogue dans les années 70, s'intéressait ici aux manèges de fêtes foraines plus particulièrement le Grand Huit où Rollercoaster (titre original du film).
Le Toboggan de la mort, n'est pas vraiment un film catastrophe en soi, il n'y a qu'une séquence spectaculaire au début, mais un habile suspense rondement mené par les excellents George Segal, Richard Widmark et l'inquiétant Timothy Bottoms.
Le réalisateur parvient ici à instaurer sans beaucoup d'action une réelle ambiance oppressante quand nos héros sont à la poursuite du méchant et un suspense plutôt efficace.
On reconnaîtra parmi les autres acteurs la toute jeune Helen Hunt et une des premières apparitions de Steve Guttenberg au cinéma, Henry Fonda se contentant de deux scènes comme il avait l'habitude dans ce genre de films à la fin de sa carrière.
Le film est également le 3ème a avoir été tourné en procédé Sensurround (après Tremblement de Terre et La bataille de Midway) qui consistait à faire trembler les fauteuils au moments des grandes scènes ici lors des séquences de grand huit filmées en caméra subjective.
Un peu oublié et moins connu que ses illustres ainés, Le Toboggan de la mort n'est pas moins un sympathique film catastrophe, à revoir si vous êtes fan du genre.
